The eldest daughter of Bihar’s so-called first family, a doctor by profession, on Tuesday filed her nomination as a businesswoman and a social worker.

Misa Bharati, the firstborn of RJD chief Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi, contesting the Lok Sabha poll from the Pataliputra constituency, has an MBBS degree to her credit.

Later, when The Telegraph asked Misa’s husband, Shailesh Kumar, about her declaration in the nomination she filed, he replied that she was “into distribution business of fast moving consumer goods”.

Misa had hit headlines in the late-1990s by topping her MBBS degree exam, with a distinction in gynaecology, from Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and she takes pride calling herself a doctor. “I would like to say that as a doctor by profession, I would engage myself in issues related to health. During the campaign, I visited several places in the constituency and realised that health is a major issue which I need to concentrate on,” said Misa, before leaving 10 Circular Road, the official residence of former chief minister Rabri Devi.

Misa had earlier told The Telegraph that she could not practise because immediately after clearing her MBBS exam, she got married. She had also said it was not possible for her to continue with the medical profession considering the family responsibilities she had to shoulder.

Misa, named after the Emergency-era Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) under which her father was jailed, did not file her nomination like other leaders in the form of a roadshow. Misa kept her nomination a low-key affair and strictly asked the workers and supporters not to raise any slogan or use party banner.

Married to software engineer Shailesh Kumar in 1999, Misa took the blessings of mother Rabri and hugged younger brother Tej Pratap. Clad in a green salwar suit matching the colour of the RJD party flag and wearing golden sandals, Misa looked cheerful and also touched the feet of her mother-in-law.

Asked about contenders Ram Kripal Yadav and Ranjan Prasad Yadav, Misa, the mother of two daughters said: “I will contest against my two uncles and not to forget uncle Ranjan Prasad Yadavji has already given me his blessings. Recently, I had visited Danapur diara. It really pained a lot to see the pathetic condition there. Now, my responsibility has increased. I am 200 per cent sure that people would vote for me and I would win from the Pataliputra constituency.”

Speaking about her daughter filing the nomination, Lalu said: “It’s not my daughter filing the nomination, it is the RJD, the Congress and the NCP contesting the election. The three parties will defeat the communal forces in the state.”

Accompanied by father Lalu Prasad and select group of leaders, Misa left for the Patna collectorate with very few supporters in tow at 10.47 am and reached her destination at 11.02am.

While Misa was filing the nomination papers in front of returning officer Neel Kamal, RJD workers maintained silence outside the building and did not even shout a single slogan in her of Lalu’s support.

Many of her supporters who gathered near Kargil Chowk did not even come to know when Misa entered the collectorate.

Nomination filed, Misa happily stepped outside with father Lalu and flashed the victory sign. The affidavit furnished by Misa indicated the value of her movable assets at Rs 83,92,956.15, including Rs 80,000 cash in hand. Her immovable assets stood at Rs 1,17,13,900.
