Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday squarely blamed the Congress for the lack of unity in the national anti-BJP Opposition.

In his 70-minute address to over 100 JDU members during the state working committee meet held at the party office in Patna, Nitish accused his alliance partner Congress for not believing in one ideology and principle.

A senior JDU leader who was present shared the highlights of Nitish's speech with The Telegraph.

Nitsh is livid with the Congress specially after its senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad attacked the chief minister for supporting the NDA's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind.

"When I supported Ram Nath Kovind, what kind of allegations were made against me? Don't you think that I have right to hit back? I was about to attend June 22 (national Opposition) meeting but when Ghulam Nabi Azad came to Patna to attend iftar, what did he say? After hearing his comment I decided not to attend the meeting," Nitish told his party members.

Azad had said Nitish was bent on defeating Bihar ki beti Meira Kumar by backing Kovind for President.

"I do not believe in buttering anyone," Nitish said at the JDU meet on Sunday. "You (Congress) do whatever who want to do but I am not going to compromise with my ideology. I have never changed my ideology; it is the Congress who do not believe in one ideology."

Nitish said he had pushed for Opposition unity during the Uttar Pradesh and Assam Assembly elections, which failed due to lack of interest from the Congress.

"Congress ko bhidna tha kis se aur bhid gaye hum se (Congress was supposed jostle with someone else but they jostled with me)," Nitish said.

Accompanied by state unit president Bashishtha Narayan Sigh and former Speaker Uday Narayan Choudhary on the dais, Nitish said he takes any decision at the right time and pressure politics will not work on him.

Asked about Nitish attacking the Congress during the meeting, Bihar Congress president Ashok Choudhary told The Telegraph: "No official communication has come on this part. No JDU leaders have given such statement on Congress officially in media, so it would not be correct to speak on a closed-door meeting. If any JDU leader will give such a statement in the media then only the Congress will reply."
