The examination department of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University is all set to go hi-tech by October.

University vice-chancellor Pandit Phalande has taken the lead role regarding the initiative and the university has reached an understanding with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), New Delhi, to digitise the functioning of the examination department.

Sources said the move is aimed to streamline the functioning of the academic session, including announcing results within 45 days after an examination is conducted. Even the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) team during its recent visit to the university was unimpressed with the functioning of the examination department. The examination controller, Pankaj Kumar, said: "Once the digitisation and computerisation of the department are done, the students won't face any trouble regarding their results."

The poor functioning of the examination department has been a cause of concern for many.

Arun Kumar Singh, a member of the senate, said: "The menace regarding the declaration of results has reached its peak."

Mohammad Shanur Rahman, a student of Ramdayalu Singh College, said: "I still haven't received the result of my final-year examination. After several visits to the university, I was told the examiners haphazardly submitted the marksheets but failed to combine the total marks of all papers."

Pandit Phalande said he had warned the examiners and tabulators to perform their task meticulously.

The NIC team visited the university in late August to impart technical skills and knowledge to the officials and employees of the examination department. The examination department will purchase around 100 computers to help the department function in a better manner.

The vice-chancellor said: "At the time of admissions, the computer will be fed with all data regarding the students. The examination department will then allot a registration number within 60 days to the students. Admit cards and marksheets will also be made available on the university website. Acting on a suggestion offered by NAAC, the university is also exploring possibilities to set up evaluation centres to examine answer-sheets at places other than on the college premises. Examiners will be punished or debarred from the evaluation duty if they submit incomplete mark-sheets to students."
