Patna, Feb. 5: Former Saran deputy inspector-general (DIG) Alok Kumar was suspended today.

Kumar, who has been accused of allegedly demanding Rs 10 crore as extortion from a representative of a liquor manufacturing company, would remain attached to the office of the Bihar Military Police additional director-general (ADG) in Patna during the period of his suspension.

Home department principal secretary Amir Subhani said a notification with regard to suspension of Kumar, a 1997-batch IPS officer of Jammu and Kashmir cadre and currently on inter-state deputation, was issued by the home (police) department today. The action against the former Saran DIG was initiated under rules 3 (1) of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rule, 1969, he said. The notification said Kumar had been put under suspension for misuse of the post to suit his vested interest, working against the dignity of a senior police officer, corrupt practices and dereliction of duty. The high-profile officer was removed from the post on January 21 and was kept on waiting for posting at the police headquarters.

Kumar has been asked not to leave the headquarters without permission of the competent authority. Sources said that Kumar would get only sustenance allowance during the period of his suspension. The notification, however, does not mention about the departmental proceedings against him.
