Oct. 28: Over Rs 50 lakh was looted today in two different incidents on the either side of the Ganga, exposing the gaping holes in policing again a day after serial blasts had shaken Patna.

Rs 14.25 lakh was looted from some employees of a national highway toll plaza around 11.30am at Bhusahi in Muzaffarpur district, around 105km north of Patna, while they were going to deposit the cash in a bank in Muzaffarpur. Two hours and 45 minutes later and 235km away, eight armed criminals looted Rs 43 lakh from a van transporting cash of Madhya Bihar Gramin Bank near Khesar in Aurangabad, around 130km southwest of Patna.

Sources said the looted cash was withdrawn from the main branch of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in Aurangabad town for distribution in different branches of Madhya Bihar Gramin Bank, including the ones at Deo and Bishanpur. Assistant manager Krishnanand Trivedi and two guards — Akhilesh Kumar Rai of Ara in Bhojpur and Nagendra Singh of Sherghati in Gaya — were travelling in the cash-laden van.

As the van approached the Deo Mor under the jurisdiction of Deo police station around 1.15pm, eight armed criminals on four bikes intercepted it and started firing indiscriminately. The two guards — Akhilesh and Nagendra — retaliated. After the guards suffered bullet injuries, the criminals looted the cash and fled with the duo’s firearms.

Akhilesh, who received a bullet injury in the waist, was rushed to Anugrah Narayan Medical College and Hospital, Gaya. Nagendra is nursing his injuries at Sherghati referral hospital. Both are said to be out of danger.

Confirming the incident, Aurangabad superintendent of police (SP) Upendra Sharma said the police were conducting investigations.

Earlier in the day, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) overtook the one transporting the employees of the national highway toll plaza at Bhusahi under Bochahan police station of Muzaffarpur district on NH-57 and came to a screeching halt. Four criminals came out of the SUV and looted the cash from the toll plaza employees at gunpoint. After committing the crime, the criminals fled towards Motihari in the SUV.

Confirming the incident, Muzaffarpur senior SP Saurav Kumar said it appeared to be a well-planned crime.
