Patna, Dec. 14: Police today said Deepak Kumar, who was robbed of Rs 18 lakh at Dakbungalow Chowk on Monday afternoon, was allegedly involved in the loot case himself.

Kumar works as a cash receiver for Ranchi-based Radiant Cash Management Private Limited.

The police today said Radiant Cash Management Private Limited has accused Kumar of embezzling the cash.

“A letter was sent to the police by the company stating that Deepak Kumar is involved in the embezzlement of the cash and they are sure that no loot has taken place. Though the police are still investigating the case, the letter raises doubts over Deepak. He lodged an FIR with the Kotwali police station regarding the loot. Now, the police will be investigating the matter from all angles,” a senior police officer said.

On Monday, Kumar withdrew Rs 18 lakh from a private bank at Dakbungalow Chowk. He was travelling in an SUV and once he took out the money kept in a bag, he asked the driver to take a U-turn from the roundabout and take the road that goes to Patna Junction.

When Kumar was crossing the road to reach his car, two men on a bike snatched the bag containing the money from him and sped away, Kumar said in his statement to the police.

“The Dakbungalow roundabout has heavy traffic all the time. There is adequate police at the roundabout the entire day and evening. It is impossible to loot someone there. Moreover, since there are no eyewitnesses in the case, it raises more suspicion,” the officer said.

The state capital has witnessed two incidents of similar nature in one month.

On December 8, two men on a motorcycle snatched Rs 50,000 from a 63-year-old man, when he came out after withdrawing the money from a bank located near Ara roundabout under Danapur police station.

On December 3, two men on a bike snatched a bag containing Rs 1 lakh from Sanjay Kumar, a businessman based at Nokha in Rohtas. He had withdrawn the money from the Boring Canal Road branch of Punjab National Bank during the day.

In neither of the cases, the police have been able to make a breakthrough.

“What happened to the police claim of providing security to the people of the city? Things were fine till some time but again we are going back to the old-Bihar era. All these incidents are nothing but examples of poor policing. There have been so many incidents of chain-snatching and loot but criminals don’t have any police fear,” said Sanjeet Kumar Singh, a Bakarganj-based businessman.
