The Pirbhore police station house officer was recalled on Sunday for allegedly trying to outrage the modesty of a woman, four days after the victim lodged a complaint with the women’s helpline.
The women’s helpline cell in-charge in Patna, instead of helping a victim, allegedly tried to hush up the case. Patna City superintendent of police (SP) Jayant Kant directed the accused to report to the police lines after the woman approached him.
The victim, a 20-year-old insurance adviser, said in her written complaint to the women’s helpline of the police that Rahmat Ali, the station house officer, called her on the pretext of purchasing an insurance policy in the name of his wife. The officer had initially asked her to come to the police station on August 22.
On reaching the police station, she could not find the officer. When she called up Ali on his cellphone, he asked her to come to a hotel room opposite the police station on Ashok Rajpath. As the girl expressed helplessness to visit him in a hotel, the officer reportedly tried to convince her telling that he was like her guardian and she should not suspect any foul play. Once finding her alone in the hotel room, Ali allegedly tried to outrage her modesty and forcibly pushed her on the bed.
According to the victim, he threatened her with dire consequences if she tried to lodge any complaint against him. “I am a man and you are just a girl. At last, you will be the loser for being a girl,” she quoted the officer as saying.
She managed to escape from the hotel and approached the women’s helpline. She even submitted a written complaint to the women’s helpline cell in-charge, Prameela.
Prameela, however, kept the matter under wraps for four days and even tried to convince her to negotiate with the police officer. “Instead of probing the complaint, she tried to lure me to reach a compromise,” the girl told reporters today (Sunday).
On Sunday morning, she approached Kant, who gave her a patient hearing promising action. Kant, sources said, later called up Prameela. She admitted that the girl had submitted the petition to her three days ago.
“Today being a Sunday, I had decided to report the matter to the senior police officer on Monday,” Prameela said.
Kant also called the victim in the evening and talked to her separately.
