Patna, March 31: Bihar State Youth Congress members today said it would launch a statewide movement to oppose the state government’s efforts to take the autonomy of the universities under its control.
They will oppose the manner in which the state government passed 12 bills, including the University Amendment Act, and has appealed to Governor Devanand Konwar to not give his assent to the bills.
“The way in which these bills were passed in the Assembly, without allowing the legislators a chance to express their opinions or oppose them, shows the state government’s autocratic and undemocratic behaviour,” Youth Congress president Lallan Kumar said.
Senior Congress members Vijay Shanker Mishra, Sudhakar Singh, Syed Kamran Hussain and former Union minister Dasai Choudhary also appealed to the governor against the bill.
“Bihar State University (Amendment) Bill, 2011, Bihar State University Commission, 2011, Patna University (Amendment) Bill, 2011, are intended to take control of the universities by clipping the chancellor’s powers,” Sudhakar Singh said.
