Ten MSc students of Central University of South Bihar have cracked the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering 2017.

All the students are from the Centre for Biological Sciences. Centre head Rizwanul Haque said bio-technology students Salma Bano, Premlata Kumari, Archana and Kumari Uma Mahto qualified, as did Adity Arora, Lokesh Ranjan, Shaileshnand Jha, Shailja Shefali, Neha Chauhan and Sonatan Soren from MSc life science.

Vice-chancellor Harish Chandra Singh Rathore wished the students success and a bright career ahead in research.

Life science student Lokesh said: "The mantra behind my success is hard work, determination and the guidance I received from my teachers. State-of-the art laboratories of the departments added depth to the course structure."

Job offer

Six students of National Institute of Technology-Patna have been placed with e-commerce giant Amazon. All of them have been offered an annual package of Rs 27.2 lakh.

Divya, Kajol Kumari, Rajat and Akash from the information technology (IT) department and computer science students Ranjan and Ashutosh Kumar have bagged the lucrative jobs, and will be trained at the company's office in Hyderabad.

NIT-Patna placement in-charge Samrat Mukherjee said: "Many software companies such as IBM, Infosys, Trident and Capgemini participated in the placement drive."

IT student Akash said: "The training and placement cell members helped us in applying for the jobs. The faculty members also guided us in choosing the right companies."

Class for teachers

National Institute of Technology-Patna conducted pedagogy classes last week for its faculty members. Former Union Public Service Commission chairman D.P. Agarwal was the chief guest at the session held on April 12.

He said: "Teachers, especially in engineering institutions, should always opt for innovative teaching. Teachers should focus on practical teaching rather than theoretical

Most of the teaching module in engineering courses and in universities is available on the Internet and books. The real work of a teacher lies in how easily s/he can help students understand the topic," Agarwal added.

He also said that the syllabus of engineering courses should be updated at regular intervals so that modern topics are added to the curriculum.

The chief guest asked the teachers present at the session to seek feedback from students on the teaching module, and if there are requirements for improvement.

Prakash Chandra, a teacher from NIT's mechanical engineering department, who attended the session, said: "The teachers were happy with the inputs provided by the guests as the session. It was very enriching."

Convocation

The annual convocation of Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) regional centre was held at Vidyapati Bhavan on April 14. Around 600 out of 9,000 students from across the state attended the ceremony in Patna.

Chief guest was newly appointed Magadh University vice-chancellor Qamar Ahsan. "Education's main focus should be overall development of not an individual but of the entire society," he said. "Institutions like Ignou help spread education in remote areas where there are no colleges or universities."

Ignou regional director Qaseemuddin Haider read out the annual progress report of the university.

"I want to pursue a PhD after this," said Akanksha, a student who completed her MCom from Ignou. "Ignou has helped me a lot. The institute's study material is good and enriching and is no less than the study material provided by other regular universities and colleges."

Chandan Kumar, another student, said: "I joined Ignou to prepare for competitive examinations. After taking admission in Ignou, I don't have to worry about my attendance in class and can focus on clearing the competitive examinations."
