Chief minister Nitish Kumar's frustration at the Grand Alliance's urban drubbing in last year's Assembly elections became evident as he inaugurated the Exhibition Road flyover on Sunday.
Though he is credited with changing the face of the city's infrastructure, Nitish could not translate his work into votes. All four Patna urban seats - Kumhrar, Patna Sahib, Bankipore and Digha - had gone to the BJP.
"People of this city forget my work," the chief minister said. "You keep on forgetting, I will keep on working; because doing work gives me the greatest pleasure."
Even the 2.275km Jagdeopath-Sheikhpura Mor flyover, which Nitish inaugurated on July 21 last year and which commuters feel has brought huge relief to the busy stretch, hardly had any impact on the election.
"People living in villages respect work and one would have to wait when those in the city start doing the same," Nitish said sarcastically.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections too, the JDU could not win either Patliputra or Patna Sahib though Nitish's second term (2010-15) focused strongly on developing amenities in Patna.
On Sunday, he promised swift commutes for people. "After opening of this bridge, the people will not face any problem while going towards Kankerbagh. Road projects are being inaugurated one after another. Last week, we had inaugurated the construction work of India's longest bridge - Kachchi-Dargah to Bidupur - and today, another flyover is open to the public," Nitish said after cutting the ribbon on the 612m flyover at Ramgoolam Chowk.
Shortly after the inauguration, Nitish inspected the flyover; his cavalcade travelled on it and returned after touching its Chiraiyatand end.
During the inauguration ceremony, the chief minister also announced a new flyover on Fraser Road. However, he did not share details of the new project.
Nitish's deputy Tejaswi, who is also the road construction minister, said: "Widening of existing roads in the city is hardly possible anymore. We have to look for solutions to get rid of traffic jams and flyovers are the only solution. Nitish ji is guiding me as a guardian and Bihar will develop under his leadership."
The Exhibition Road flyover is part of a two-way extension of the Chiraiyatand flyover. While the Exhibition Road flyover is a northward extension, another flyover is being constructed over the busy Station Road, linking Chiraiyatand with the Mithapur railway overbridge. The Station Road flyover is expected to be ready by April.
Parking lots - development of which delayed the project's inauguration - under the Exhibition Road flyover can accommodate 150 four-wheelers at a time.
