Clippings from Aamir Khan’s TV show Satyamev Jayate were shown to inspire participants at a seminar organised on Monday to combat adverse sex ratio.

The seminar, “Beti Zindabad Abhiyan-Bitiya Bachao-Manavta Bachao”, was organised by non-government organisation ActionAid at AN Sinha Institute of Social Studies. It was attended mostly by women representatives from different fields like politics, health, media and education.

Writer Frank Krishner said: “When we wake up in the morning, we want to see positive stories that could create an impact on us. It’s time that the boys take up home science and we should see house-husbands. Gender sensitivity must start from school. ”

The speakers discussed how in states like Haryana, girls are bought and married to multiple men.

Keerti, the NGO’s programme officer, said: “We have launched Beti Zindabad Abhiyan in the state. We are also planning to spread awareness in 15,000 villages. We are also planning to conduct another programme, Bitiya Janmotsava, every three months. We would organise a function to felicitate the girls born in three months and would name a plant after them.”

The NGO would also organise Gram Sabha Resolution on October 2, she said. Around 500 panchayats in the state would make resolutions to protect girl child. Events like painting and slogan-writing competitions would also be organised in schools and colleges.

BJP leader Kiran Ghai said: “We’ll have to start from home and we need to improve ourselves.” Chairperson of Bihar State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Nisha Jha was also present.

Journalist Rajani said: “Those parents who will have girl child, should be given pension. The girls should also be given health cards.”

Chairperson of Bihar Mahila Udyog Sangh Pushpa Chopra, general secretary of Bihar Mahila Samaj Sharad Kumari, BJP leader Ganga Prasad, JD(U) leader and principal of Ganga Devi Mahila College Usha Sinha were also present.
