SULTAN OF SWING: Aman Raj in action

Aman Raj, who grew up playing the sport on the greens of Patna Golf Club, has made the city proud once again.

The 21-year-old has clinched the second position in the BTI Open Golf, which concluded in Dhaka on Thursday. He shares the No. 2 spot with Chandigarh's Harendar Gupta and Bangalore's Khalin Joshi.

Aman hit two birdies - on the first and the 14th hole - during Thursday's game, which helped him secure the second spot among 126 golfers who took part in the four-day tourney.

"Winning a title in a golf tournament always boost golfers for upcoming tournaments. I am happy about yesterday's achievement. But I am focusing on upcoming events also," said Aman.

Aman's parents said they were proud of their boy.

"Aman became a professional golfer last year. Prior to that, he was playing as an amateur golfer. In 2015, he clinched the top position among amateur golfers according to data released by the Indian Golf Union. At present, among professional golfers in the country, Aman is ranked seventh and it's quite a big achievement for him. The best thing about Aman is that he has been very focused right since the beginning," said Aman's father, Shashi Raj Sinha, who happens to be a certified coach of National Golf Academy of India.

Aman's mother, Madhulika Sinha, said Aman had been a disciplined golfer from the beginning, which could be gauged from the fact that even during his board examinations, he made it a point to continue practising golf and focusing on his studies, giving each equal importance.

"Aman's school used to start at 6am but he used to go for his round of golf around 5am so that he could squeeze in an hour's practice. He had assured us that he would strike a balance between his studies and the sport and so he did. Aman has been a consistent performer since the age of seven. In 2012, when he was just 17, he represented the national team in the Asian Junior Golf Team Championship held in Malaysia. The Indian team had bagged the fourth position in the tournament. We are really proud of him. Now that he has become a professional golfer, we only want to see him winning many more titles," said Madhulika.

Aman, who is now waiting for his graduation results (honours in English from Indira Gandhi National Open University), is all set to tee off in another golf tourney, slated to start in a week.

He will take part in the Hero Indian Open, the prestigious European-Asian golf tournament, scheduled to be held at DLF Golf and Country Club, Gurgaon, from March 9 to March 12.
