Sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday conducted simultaneous raids on the residential premises of a senior officer of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) in connection with a disproportionate assets case.

Acting on a complaint, three separate teams conducted raids at two places in Patna and the native village of Rakesh Kumar at Mohanpur in Samastipur district. Kumar is at present posted as divisional engineer (mobile), Telephone, Patna.

Confirming the raids, deputy inspector-general, CBI (Patna), said the searches were still going on.

“Details would be available by tomorrow (Thursday),” he said, adding that the officials conducted the raids after a disproportionate assets case was lodged against Kumar on Tuesday.

A source said the CBI officials searched two flats of Kumar — one at Sai Enclave in Shastri Nagar and another at Narayan Enclave in Friends’ Colony (Ashiana Nagar). Twelve passbooks of different banks, a locker and 36 deeds of plots were seized.

The raiding teams also stumbled upon documents related to huge investments in insurance policies.

“Scrutiny of the seized documents is going on. The operation is still on and would conclude on Thursday,” said a member of the raiding team under the cover of anonymity.

The source said a complaint with regard to disproportionate assets worth Rs 1.25 crore to his known sources of income was lodged against Kumar at the Patna branch police station of the investigation agency and subsequently a search order was obtained from the special CBI court.

The news about the raid on the divisional engineer’s residential premises spread like wildfire in the city. Several relatives and sympathisers were spotted moving in and around the Sai Enclave apartment of the divisional engineer at Shastri Nagar (Professors’ Colony) in Patna.

The source said several complaints were earlier made to the senior officers of the BSNL against Kumar but no action was taken against him for the reason best known to them.

“Kumar’s reputation is not good in the department,” an investigation officer said.

The economic offences unit (EOU) on September 4 recovered cash and property worth over Rs 5.81 crore after raids on the offices and homes of three engineers of the public health and engineering department. Cases of disproportionate assets were lodged against the officials at the EOU police station in Patna a day earlier.

Separate teams searched the office and residential premises of executive engineers Sanjay Kumar Singh and Pranvesh Singh and assistant engineer Arvind Kumar. The raids were conduced at 12 places in the state.
