Kishanganj, Feb. 25: Eight trucks loaded with cattle, which were being illegally taken to Assam through State Highway-63 in Kishanganj, were seized today.

The incident occurred at the Tedhia Bridge on IRP Road under Kochadhaman police station in Kishanganj. In connection with the illegal cattle trafficking, one person identified as Md Mustafa, who was the owner of all the cattle, was arrested. Mustafa was travelling in an SUV alongside the trucks when the police intercepted the vehicles at SH-63 and arrested him.

Kochadhaman police are interrogating all the drivers of the trucks. The police are likely to register a case under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 against those who would be found guilty after the completion of the preliminary inquiry. The superintendent of police, Ranjit Kumar Mishra told The Telegraph that he was striving to bust the gangs involved in illegal cattle trafficking in Seemanchal.

However, he said that he had recently joined the district but had information about the illegal trade of farm animals.

The trucks were loaded with 25 buffaloes and the remaining were cows and oxen. Many of them were milk mulching and police had taken these animals to goshalas.
