Patna, June 3: The special investigation team (SIT) probing into the killing of Ranvir Sena chief Brahmeshwar Singh ‘Mukhiya’ are scrutinising the details of cellphone calls made to and from Katira in Ara between an hour before and after his death to zero in on the assailants.

The SIT members have procured the printouts of the calls made from and to the area in that time span. A member of the SIT said the call details would help the investigating team ascertain the identity of the assailants.

Singh was gunned down near his Katira house under Nawada police station in Ara town on Friday morning.

“It is a blind case because there is no eyewitness to the incident,” a police officer said, adding that the three empty cartridges, a live cartridge of 6.75 bore and bloodstains found at the spot had been sent for forensic examination.

“The arm used for killing Singh is frequently used by criminals in the state,” the officer said.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Singh was shot from close range, as there were six bullet injury marks on his body.

“All the bullets pierced through his chest and other parts of the body,” an investigating officer said, adding that the number of assailants could be more than one.

Deputy superintendent of police Sunil Kumar, who is heading the SIT, said the team started the investigation on Saturday after all its members reached Ara. “We are already on the job,” he said, adding that efforts were on to zero in on the criminals involved in the incident.

Director-general of police Abhayanand said the investigation was proceeding in the right direction.

“Our men are on the job and they will bring the culprits to book at the earliest. The first priority was to restore law and order in the town. Now proper investigation has begun,” he said.

Bhojpur superintendent of police M.R. Naik said the members of the SIT visited the spot and were studying the evidence gathered from there earlier.

“Since investigation is on, it will not be justified to make any comment,” he said, adding that once the case is cracked, everything would be disclosed to the media.

Sources said deputy inspector-general (Shahabad range) Ajitabh Kumar called on the doctors of Ara sadar hospital, who conducted post-mortem on Singh’s body. Kumar is supervising the investigation.
