Scam cuffs on former mukhiya

MUZAFFARPUR:A former mukhiya, Nutan Devi, and her husband, Karpoori Thakur, were arrested on Friday for their alleged involvement in irregularities in disbursement of scholarship among Scheduled Caste students of Barri panchayat in the district. Police said a case of financial irregularities of Rs 5 lakh was lodged with Katra police station against Nutan and her husband in 2013. A warrant of arrest was pending against the couple for long.

Rape attempt

BETTIAH: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly molested by a forest department employee, Basudev Manjhi, on Friday evening. The girl told Bairia police in West Champaran district that Manjhi forcibly grabbed her and took her to his room where he tried to rape her. She was rescued by some residents who rushed to the spot on hearing her cries for help. Manjhi, however, denied the charge and claimed that he was assaulted by some youths when he stopped them from entering the forest with two minor girls. Bettiah sub-divisional police officer S.K. Jha said the allegation against Manjhi was being verified.
