Patna, Aug. 26: The Bihar Military Police (BMP) personnel taking care of the Mahatma Gandhi Setu are set to be back.

Patna city SP central and traffic Shivdeep Lande said an order for reinstatement of the contingent had been issued following instructions from deputy inspector-general (central range) Vineet Vinayak.

The order came on a day The Telegraph reported about basic traffic norms, such as overtaking, being violated and broken at will after the contingent of 110 BMP constables along with three DSP-rank officers and five inspectors were removed from the bridge on August 24.

“Orders for restoring their services have been sent this evening upon the instructions of the DIG. All the men will be at the Gandhi Setu from tomorrow hopefully. However, this time there are certain changes in the strategy as the bridge, at present, is not witnessing any traffic jam,” Lande told The Telegraph.

Earlier, the entire force was just concentrated on the stretch of the bridge with the men working on eight-hour shifts.

“This time, the policemen will be spread out till Fatuha, about 25km from Patna. The entire police team will be present on the whole stretch of the road from Fatuha until the Mahatma Gandhi Setu. With traffic jam on the bridge not a problem at present, the police have decided to spread out the force,” Lande said.

Police sources said the move would keep under check errant drivers and also make the stretch, known for incidents of loot, safe for drivers.

Today, the police on duty at the bridge were more vigilant and claimed to have slapped a fine of Rs 40,000 on overtaking trucks.
