Patna, Jan. 22: Residents will soon be able to get expert advice for brain tumour care in the state capital. Medicity Medanta from Gurgaon is set to open an outpatients’ department (OPD) in the city.

The facility will be opened at Jagdish Memorial Hospital, Kankerbagh, on January 28. Dr A.N. Jha, the head of the neuroscience department of Medicity Medanta, will also offer online consultation to patients from Bihar free of cost.

Patients would be able upload their scans and medical history on the website provided by the hospital. They will be provided online opinion.

Jha, who hails from Bihar, told The Telegraph over telephone: “While neurological diseases are many, quality neurologists whom the patients can consult are few.”

He added: “At our institute, we have a large number of patients from Bihar. We have performed several advanced surgeries on hundreds of patients from the state. Many of them keep coming here for follow-up consultation. So, we thought that an OPD should be opened in Patna to guide these patients. Many others from the state who need medical opinion will also benefit.”

Medanta’s association with the state is not new. Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in the state capital has approached Medanta Institute for Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine to help it develop facilities for advanced treatment of liver diseases.

Jha, one of the pioneers of brain tumour surgery in the country, uses advanced techniques like MRI in brain suite, radio surgery, cerebrovascular surgery, image-guided surgery and frame- less stereo-taxy, to treat the disease.

He spoke on specialised brain surgery that allows precise treatment of complicated tumours in the sensitive areas of the brain. Jha uses the latest advancement in image-guided surgery, providing real-time view of the tumour site with intra-operative magnetic resonance imaging.

“The technique is the world’s first fully integrated open-bore MRI system. It has a 70cm magnet. This form of surgery is presently used on patients with tumours that present a challenge because of size or location. Brain suite may also help reduce complications and the need for further surgeries,” said Jha.
