Patna, Sept. 22: A Hindi department student of Patna College was found hanging today in his room at Jackson Hostel in the state capital. The youth’s elder brother, who had come to visit him, saw the body first.

Sources said Amrit Raj, 20, was a quiet person who lived in room number 33 on the second floor of the hostel. His brother, Ajit Raj, a resident of Pirnagar village in Khagaria district, turned up this afternoon to find if Amrit was okay because he had not received calls from home for the past two days.

Ajit knocked on the door of Amrit’s room a number of times. When it was not opened, he informed the other students, who helped him break open the door.

“I saw him hanging,” said Ajit, unable to control his tears. Their father, Jaikant Yadav, is a farmer.

Sources said in these two days, no one — neither the fellow residents of the hostel nor the college administration — had cared to knock on the shut door of room number 33 and enquire about the well being of the youth.

City central superintendent of police Shivdeep Lande told The Telegraph: “There have been a number of administrative lapses. The room in which Amrit lived was closed for two days but no one bothered to find out about him. The hostel warden is supposed to check the rooms every day. Workers are employed to clean the rooms but they, too, did not turn up. The students should have also noticed his absence.”

He added: “The body has been sent for post-mortem.” No suicide note has been found.

Patna University proctor Kriteshwar Prasad said boarders of the hostel told him that the room was closed for the past couple of days.
