Patna, March 13: Parents today blocked the road in front of St Xavier’s High School over the institution’s decision to opt for random selection to admit children under the Right to Education Act (RTE). The act stipulates that the random selection or lottery must be held in the presence of guardians or government officials.
According to the parents, the school had asked them to come at 3pm to witness the selection. But on reaching the school, the guardians found that the admission list had already been put up.
School principal Father George Nedumattam said: “We had called the guardians to see the list at 3pm. We conducted the lottery in front of the executive committee members of Parents Teachers’ Association last evening.”
Parents claimed that more than 2,500 forms were sold but school authorities said just 1,469 forms had been sold for ICSE and 265 for Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). For ICSE, 110 roll numbers were put up and for BSEB, 50 roll numbers were put up with 15 roll numbers in each of the waiting lists.
Senior superintendent of police Alok Kumar said: “The parents have lodged an FIR against the school principal and four other management members under sections 420, 406 and 120(B) of IPC, accusing the school of putting up the list by itself by 12noon. The matter will be probed.”
Sunil Yadav, a parent, said: “We could not find any guardian saying their child had made it through. No random selection was conducted before putting up the list.”
