PIL on defunct tubewells

Patna: The state government on Tuesday filed an action taken report in the case related to defunct tubewells in the state. A division bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice Anil Kumar Upadhyay has now directed petitioner Vikash Chandra alias Guddu Baba to reply within two weeks. The petitioner had said in his PIL that around 4,000 tubewell were defunct in the state.

Rape FIR

Patna: Pandrak police registered an FIR against two youths in connection with the alleged rape of a girl. In her compliant, the girl said that Ranjit Yadav and Ajay Yadav outraged her modesty on Monday evening while she was returning home from the fields.

Class X exam

Patna: The matriculation compartmental exam will be held from July 27 to 31. Around 2.33 lakh students will take the test. The Bihar School Examination Board has set up 329 examination centres across the state, 16 of them in Patna, for the purpose.

Shot dead

Sasaram: Armed men shot dead Umesh Yadav, a retired army jawan, at Dalha village under the jurisdiction of Durgawa-ti police station in Kaimur on Tuesday. The motive could be land dispute.

Firing

Biharsharif: A former deputy mayor of Nalanda, Shankar Kumar, had a providential escape when armed men opened fire at him near Amber village in Nalanda district on Tuesday. Kumar reported the incident to Nalanda superintendent of police Kumar Ashish.

Bus crushes 2

Begusarai: Two bikers were killed when a speeding bus hit them near Kankaul in Mufassil police station area on Tuesday. Angry residents attacked the police when they arrived to send the bodies for post-mortem.

Teens drown

Purnea: Two teenaged boys drowned while taking a bath in the Rauta river in Purnea district on Tuesday. Residents rescued a third person. Divers found one of the bodies and efforts were on to recover the missing person's body.

Seizure

Patna: Rajiv Nagar police on Tuesday seized Rs 10 lakh from two businessmen, Arjun Soni and Rajesh Kumar. Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted raids in JP Nagar and seized the money. The police have handed over the duo to the income-tax department for further investigation.

Competition

Patna: Raj Bhavan, under the aegis of Bihar State Child Welfare Council, on Tuesday organised a painting competition in which large number of students from different schools participated. The students were given vivid topics such as social issues, environment and various cultural themes.

Health meet

Patna: Patna divisional commissioner Anand Kishor on Tuesday chaired a meeting of Rogi Kalyan Samiti of IGIMS. At the meeting, he directed executive engineer, infrastructure, to complete construction work of the 10-floor building. Kishor also asked the hospital administration to float tenders for selection of agencies in bio-medical waste management.

AAP meet

Patna: The Aam Aadmi Party's Bihar unit will organise a Kishan Nyay Sammelan at Rabindra Bhavan on July 29. The function, in protest against the Centre, will be attended by AAP national spokesperson Sanjay Singh, Ashutosh and Delhi government minister Rajendra Prasad Gupta.

SBI event

Patna: The State Bank Of India's women's branch on Tuesday organised Teej Mahostava. SBI Mahila Samiti president Neerja Sood was among those who attended the meet.

Confinement

Patna: A Patna High Court division bench of Justice Ravi Ranjan and Justice S. Kumar on Tuesday passed an order to release Nawal Kumar Sahni on the ground that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had wrongly arrested him in a case related to seizure of ganja in 2015. Sahni is in jail since October 2016. The court said DRI might also have to pay compensation to Sahni for wrongful confinement. Sahni has sought Rs 30 lakh in compensation.
