Siblings drown in village pond

Sheikhpura (PTI): Siblings Roshan Kumar (12) and Priyanka (16) on Tuesday drowned in a pond in Jangipur village in the district.

Superintendent of police Rajendra Kumar Bheel said the incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Barbigha police station when Roshan was bathing in a private pond in front of his house.

He went into deep water and started drowning. Alerted, Priyanka jumped into the pond to save him but both drowned. Villagers fished out the bodies. Bheel said the bodies were sent to Munger sadar hospital for post-mortem.

Manjhi kin bail

Patna: The high court bench of Justice R.K. Mishra on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to the daughter of former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, Sunaina Devi, in a dowry-related case. Sunaina, was booked in a case related to the suicide of her daughter-in-law, Soni Devi. Sunaina was granted bail as the marriage took place more than seven years ago and according to law, impeachment for dowry-related deaths was illegal where marriages have been solemnised seven years ago.

Shrine plea

Patna: The vice-chairman of Ugratara Nyas Samiti, Pramil Kumar Mishra, on Tuesday wrote a letter to the tourism department secretary, urging him to expedite the work related to developing infrastructure at Ugratara Shaktipeeth. Mishra also asked the secretary to ensure quality work around the site to facilitate more tourist inflow to the place.

Passport cheer

Patna: The state police headquarters is likely to introduce passport verification through mobile Application by the end of April this year. The police headquarters has decided to provide the facility to passport applicants hailing from Patna, Bhagalpur and Gaya districts in the first phase.

Convict check

Patna: The home department has put in place the system of posting online details of people, who have been convicted and whose appeals have been rejected by appellate courts. This will help the government trace the names of the convicts and deprive them of benefits of government welfare schemes.

Fresh charge

Patna: S.K. Gupta on Monday took over the charge of director of Bihar office, Patna, of Khadi and Village Industries Commission. Gupta has vast experience of 31 years in textile world and his elevation to the post will enhance the quality and sale of khadi products in the state, a press release said.

IED seizure

New Delhi (PTI): A total of 1,702 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) weighing nearly 6,000kg were recovered from 10 Maoist-affected states, including Bihar, in 2015 in a record haul, prompting security agencies to tell their ground forces to be extra vigilant. The other states were Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Maharashtra.

Protest

Aurangabad: Shops remained closed on Tuesday in protest against the murder of a jewellery shop owner at Nabinagar on Monday.
