Munger: The Munger district administration has declared Muso Devi, a blind beggar from Hemjapur village under Dharhara block, as the brand ambassador of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in the district.

"Muso and her husband Manohar Choudhary have been begging for two decades in and around Hemjapur village in Munger district. When they got to know of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, they collected money by begging and got a toilet constructed next to their hut in Hemjapur village. Their courage and enthusiasm is appreciable," Khagesh Chandra Jha, sub-divisional officer (sadar), Munger, told The Telegraph on Wednesday.

"The district administration has paid them a sum of Rs 12,000 against the construction of the toilet. The administration has also taken more steps to provide other relief to them under various government welfare schemes. The benefits will soon reach them," Jha said.

Muso Devi recalled what prompted her to build the toilet at home.

"During the rainy season and because I almost can't see, I met with accidents on several occasions while going to attend nature's call as there was no toilet," Muso said.

She added: "The Prime Minister's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan slogan inspired us to collect a sum of Rs 20,000. I constructed a toilet with the money. Many problems have now disappeared. But I still face poverty. I cannot move out to beg after an accident. I need immediate monetary help from the government for treatment and livelihood."

Her husband, Manohar, said: "I am thankful to the Prime Minister for providing us a sum of Rs 12,000 for the construction of the toilet."
