A bank employee was arrested from Darihat in Rohtas district for outraging the modesty of a schoolgirl yesterday.

The victim’s mother told the police that Mohan Kumar, (25), an employee of Central Bihar Regional Rural Bank, called her 17-year-old daughter at his rented accommodation yesterday and subsequently raped her.

On hearing her screams, some local residents rushed to the spot and took Kumar into custody. He was handed over to the police but not before being thrashed by the mob.

Rohtas superintendent of police (SP) Vikas Burman said the accused was produced before Dehri-sub-divisional court today, which sent him to Sasaram divisional jail for 14 days.

He said the victim was sent to the Sasaram Sadar hospital today for medical examination. Preliminary report suggested that the girl had been raped. He, however, said the medical report was awaited.

Police said Kumar, a native of Rajpur Pararia village in Rohtas district, was posted at the bank for the past three years. The victim, a Class X student of a local government school, was staying with her parents in the same locality where the bank employee lived.

Burman said instruction had been issued to the Darihat police station house officer Rajiv Nayan Ram to gather evidence against the accused and file a chargesheet at the earliest.

“Since the accused has already been arrested, there is no reason to delay the chargesheet at the police station level,” he told The Telegraph.

The SP said the case would be put on fast track. “The investigation officer has been asked to approach the court requesting to conduct the trial of the accused on a day-to-day basis so that he could be prosecuted within a timeframe,” he added.

Shockingly, Sunday’s incident is the second of its kind reported from the district within a fortnight. Earlier, a 14-year-old girl was gang-raped by two youths at her Bara Patthar locality under the jurisdiction of Dehri-on-Sone police station.

The police have, however, failed to make any breakthrough in the case even after a week of the incident. “Raids were conducted at the suspected hideouts of the accused but nobody has been arrested so far,” the SP said.

Sources said a police team had been sent outside Rohtas to pick up the accused on the basis of call details of their cellphones. Two persons were earlier detained for interrogation but they were let off after the victim refused to identity them as accused.

On September 6, the body of a 14-year-old girl was found at Dhanan Nisharpura village in rural Patna after she had gone missing two days ago.

Ranitalab police station house officer Ranjeet Kumar had said attempts to identify the people behind the crime were on but to no avail. The police suspected it to be a case of gang rape.
