A smiling Ruby Rai touched the feet of Sangeeta Devi, the in-charge of the girl's remand home, on Monday and said: " Mummy, main chhoot rahi hoon (Mummy, I am being released)."

RELIEF: Ruby Rai

Like other inmates of the remand home in Patna City's Gai Ghat, the disgraced Intermediate arts "topper" - who a court granted bail on Monday - calls Sangeeta "Mummy".

Additional district and sessions judge-1 Parwez Alam, while passing the order for Ruby's bail after hearing the petition filed by Prayas Juvenile Aid Centre, an NGO, pointed out that Ruby is a minor and her parents, her college and the Bihar School Examination Board had put her in this situation.

Police had arrested Ruby, a student of the Vishun Roy College in Vaishali owned by jailed topper scam kingpin Bachcha Rai, on June 25 after she fared miserably in the board re-test.

On July 4, the special vigilance court accepted that she is a minor and she was shifted to the remand home from Beur Central Jail.

"Ruby has been well behaved though stressed out," a source in the remand home told The Telegraph on Monday. "She was very happy to know about her bail. Some of her family members will be coming tomorrow morning and she will be handed over to them after formalities."

Ruby, according to her matriculation certificate, was born on November 15, 1998.

"The fight for Ruby has been successful," said Suresh Kumar of the Prayas Juvenile Aid Centre. "She will be able to go to her home in Vaishali district now." Ruby's grandfather Munshi Prasad Rai said he was preparing for his granddaughter's arrival; her parents, named in the topper scam FIR, are absconding.

"I had come to the court last time and she was so sad. Now I cannot wait any longer to see her," Munshi Prasad said. "Tomorrow early morning I will start for Patna with a friend of mine and I expect to reach the remand home by 10am. She will be returning home after so long. However, there is sadness too as her parents are not in the house to receive her... I don't know what her future holds. I will ensure that she gets admission is some college and more importantly, she continues her studies seriously. She is just a child and didn't know what was happening."
