The home science department of Patna Women's College organised an outreach programme for 47 underprivileged women of Manthan, Khagaul, on the college premises last Friday.

The college principal, Sister Marie Jessie, distributed gifts and food packets to the women. She also appreciated the hard work and efforts put in by students and the faculty members of the department to educate the women about hygiene and cleanliness.

Students welcomed the guests with a welcome song and dance. Recreational activities were conducted for the women. Not only did they participate with enthusiasm, they also won prizes in various games organised for them.

Punam Kumari and Kumari Rupam, both assistant professors in the home science department, talked about health, hygiene deficiencies and diseases.

"It was an effort made by the students and teachers to create awareness among the underprivileged women, who otherwise remain ignorant about their health," said the principal.

"We advised the women on how to keep their home and surroundings neat and clean. I am glad because they heard us with much interest and agreed to come to our college to learn better from our faculty members," said Sneha Gupta, a college student.

Cancer awareness

The home science department of Patna Women's College marked World Breastfeeding Promotion Day on Saturday by organising a breast cancer awareness programme at the institution's auditorium.

The chief guest, Manisha Singh, an associate director of Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, graced the occasion. She outlined the causes, effects and treatment for breast cancer and how breastfeeding plays an important role in reducing the risk of breast cancer, which according to the survey, is likely to become an epidemic by 2025.

"Nature has filled mother's milk with high nutritious value, which nurtures the newborn baby as well as the woman's body and reduces the risk of cancer," said Dr Singh.

The aim of the programme was to educate people about the importance of breastfeeding, causes of cancer and to motivate them to spread the information on basic precautionary measures.

Priya Singh, a student of home science department, said every woman should know the importance of breastfeeding and should protect themselves from cancer and similar diseases.

"We must adopt a healthy lifestyle and eating habits for a healthy mind and body," she said.

Students enact a play on Feast Day at St Xavier’s College and St Xavier’s College of Management and Technology

Celebrating a saint

St Xavier's College and St Xavier's College of Management and Technology celebrated the Feast Day of St Ignatius of Loyola last Friday.

The event is celebrated on July 31 every year in honour of St Ignatius of Loyola, the foremost patron in the Society of Jesus.

The programme began with a prayer. The college students later performed a fusion dance and a skit, which presented a glimpse into the life of the saint. The skit showed how St Ignatius fought over human weaknesses and emerged as a leader.

The chief guest at the programme was retired Bishop John Baptist Thakur, the Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Muzaffarpur.

In his address, the bBshop shared the significance of the day with the students and also the importance of studying in a Jesuit Institution. He said discipline and quality education were the hallmarks of Jesuit institutions.

Some members of the Jesuit fraternity were felicitated for their tireless services to humanity. Also present on the occasion was principal of St Xavier's College, Father T. Nishant.

A basketball match between the faculty members and the students was also organised on the occasion.
