Patna, Dec. 31: Policemen across the capital have a new reason to be chivalrous and nab eve-teasers. They will be rewarded for their heroics.
With a prize instituted for the police station nabbing the maximum number of eve-teasers, troublemakers and rash drivers till January 2, personnel of all the police stations would be competing with each other for bagging it.
“This would be an added incentive for the men. It would ensure a peaceful New Year, without any untoward incident,” a senior officer told The Telegraph.
An officer of Gandhi Maidan police station said the award was an added incentive.
“We are all fired up now as we want the award. Regular patrolling and checks are being done to prevent untoward incidents,” said the officer.
He added that December 31 and January 1 were sensitive days as many families come out to celebrate on those days and it was essential to ensure their security.
Officers at Pirbhore polioce stations were also pleased with the prospect of the award.
“Awards are always welcome. But we are doing our duty anyway,” said an officer.
With the capital witnessing large crowds and much fanfare at hotspots from December 25 to January 1, the police have launched special drives against law violators. Cops on high alert are checking vehicles for contraband substances, illegal liquor and arms to prevent untoward incidents.
The officer said a large number of policemen, many of them in civil dress, have been deployed at various thoroughfares to check troublemakers.
City superintendent of police Manu Maharaj said: “The drive that began on Christmas will continue till January 2. We are trying to check anti-social activities of rogue elements. Our men have been posted near alcohol shops as the troubles often begin after people have had a little too much to drink.”
Teams from various police stations raided liquor shops across the city recently. Maharaj added there was an additional drive to check rash drivers and reckless bikers. The police have formed an anti-rash driving cell to check speeding drivers. Around 50 bikers have been caught and fined for breaking traffic rules.
The main efforts, however, are aimed towards checking road Romeos.
The constables and the officers of the women’s cell are ever vigilant, said a senior officer. They have been deployed to conduct constant patrolling to prevent incidents of eve-teasing. Personnel from local police stations are assisting them.
