Patna: The special investigation team probing the murder of Sitamarhi district welfare officer Shubh Narain Dutt is contemplating to recommend the economic offences unit to confiscate disproportionate assets of prime accused Mohammad Ali, alias Babloo.
The SIT seized 11 bank passbooks with deposits worth Rs 80 lakh during a search of Ali's office and residence in Rajepur, Sitamarhi. It had also found documents related to other investments.
Ali, an Urdu teacher in a local government school who was involved in a fake certificate racket, is still absconding.
A senior officer, associated with the investigation, said on Sunday that the SIT has gathered evidences that two cheques each of Rs 23 lakh was deposited in Ali's accounts with a private bank in Sitamarhi district in 2014-15. "The SIT has asked the banks to freeze those accounts," the officer added.
Authoritative sources said Sitamarhi police will submit the details of Ali's bank accounts to the economic offences unit (EOU).
The SIT has also seized five cellphones and other incriminating documents during the search of Ali's office on Urdu Road in Sitamarhi town. "The call detail records of the mobile phones are being analysed. It will throw more light on the investigation," Sitamarhi superintendent of police (SP) Vikas Burman said.
The team had earlier arrested Ramji Rai, Sohan Thakur and Arun Bhagat in the case, and they had disclosed Ali's name to the police.
On Saturday, the police detained a person called Subhash, allegedly a relative of Chiranjivi Sagar, a gangster lodged in the Chenave divisional jail in Gopalganj, to whom Ali allegedly gave the contract to kill welfare officer Dutt.
Ali, the police said, hatched the conspiracy to eliminate Dutt, as the officer had ordered an inquiry into Ali's alleged financial irregularities.
The SIT probing the case had recovered 20 fake certificates of Ali's second wife Nazra Begum during a search of his office located on Dumra Road in Sitamarhi town, about 150km from Patna.
Raids were still underway to nab Ali, said Sitamarhi SP Burman, while not ruling out the involvement of other persons in the murder of district welfare officer Dutt on May 31. He was shot dead while out on his evening stroll.
Sources said former district welfare officer Garbhu Mandal is also under the SIT's scanner. Ali allegedly had a good relation with Mandal and reportedly accumulated huge amounts during his posting in Sitamarhi.
Sharpshooters Ramji and Sohan had escaped from Sitamarhi after the incident and took shelter in a house on Kurji Balupad in Patna from where the duo were nabbed and handed over to a Sitamarhi police team.
