Aspiring engineers were on cloud nine on Tuesday after the declaration of the IIT-JEE (main) results took them another step towards their dream career.

Capturing the ultimate sense of triumph was Sumit Kumar, a Class XII student of DAV BSEB, who clinched 315 out of a total of 360 marks in the exam, making him one of the top scorers in the state. Next, he is all set for the JEE (advanced) test scheduled on June 2.

Sumit told The Telegraph: “The main examination is just a ladder to climb towards the JEE (advanced) test, as based on the exam students would gain admission to one of the 16 IITs in the country. Now, like other students, I am anxious about the results of the board exam.”

Of 11 lakh students, who took the JEE (main) exam in the country, 1.5 lakh were declared successful on Tuesday.

The results of the JEE (main) examination would help students get admitted into centrally-funded institutes like Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT) among others.

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is conducting the exam for the first time to pick students for NITs, IIITs and other centrally-funded institutions, would rank the students giving 60 per cent weightage to marks obtained in the JEE (main) and 40 per cent marks obtained in the Class XII board examination.

“My performance in the Class XII board exam was good and I am hoping to clinch more than 90 per cent. The results will be out in June,” said Sumit.

Aditya Suman, who secured 271 marks, said: “We are now eagerly waiting for the board results but at the same time also working hard to clear the JEE advanced exam.”

Anand Kumar, the founder of Super30, claimed that 113 was the cut-off mark in the exam for general students, 70 for Other Backward Classes, 50 for Scheduled Castes and 45 for Scheduled Tribes.

Anand, all of whose 30 students have qualified for the JEE (advanced) test, said: “It is a proud moment for me as all my students have qualified. They need to work harder now.” He added that the students obtaining a rank up to around 50,000 have good chances of making it to NITs, while those aiming for top NITs such as in Tiruchirapalli, Warangal, Calicut and Surathkal, should have ranks below 20,000.

Sources said a separate ranking list of JEE (main) would be declared by July 7 for admission based on the scores in JEE (main) and the score of Class XII board exam.

The Centre for Social Responsibility & Leadership, a social organisation that runs six projects helping IIT aspirants to crack the IIT-JEE test and has director-general of police Abhayanand as the mentor, claimed that 241 of its students cleared the IIT-JEE main exam.
