Patna: Social activist Anna Hazare, who had recently stated that he would not allow another "Kejriwal" to be born out of his public-interest campaigns, will be in Patna on December 19 to be part of a dharna in support of people who are protesting against land acquisition at Digha-Rajeev Nagar.
More than 100 people under the banner of non-government organisation Akhil Bharatiya Baad Sukhad Pidit Sangarsh Morcha are sitting on a satyagraha for more than 70 days protesting against the acquisition of 1,024 acres of land at Digha-Rajeev Nagar area on Polson Road.
Octogenarian Hazare will sit in support of farmers and residents of Rajeev Nagar protesting against government's land-acquisition policy. Rambhajan Prasad Singh, the president of the Morcha, said: "We are on the dharna since September 5 when residents of Rajeev Nagar-Digha were beaten up by the police, who had gone to demolish the structures in the area. We then contacted Anna Hazare in Mumbai who promised us to stand in support of our cause as the matter concerns hundreds of people who are facing displacement threats."
The organisation members said that on September 5 district administration officials along with the police had entered the area and started demolishing the structures.
However, the police claimed that when the district administration officials reached the place to demolish the illegal structures, residents attacked the personnel and torched three earth-moving machines.
Shiv Narayan Rai, a resident of the area, said: "After the September 5 incident though the police have not entered our area during the day, at night they come and torture us."
The residents of Digha-Rajeev Nagar believe that Hazare's support to their agitation will be a big moral support as his presence will exert pressure on the state government.
JDU spokesperson Neeraj Kumar said: "The issue on which Hazare is going to stage a dharna can be resolved only through talks and not by exerting pressure on the government."
