Kishanganj, March 14: Arbindra Singh, a third-year medical student of MGM Medical College, was abducted from Caltus Chowk in Kishanganj district at 7pm yesterday. He was set free within hours.

The incident occurred when Singh went to a shop to buy chicken. Singh was later released around 11pm. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.

Three bike-borne criminals at the chowk first abused Singh and then took him away from Caltus Chowk towards Khagar Chowk. But Singh managed to call up a college hostel number from where the news spread like wildfire on the institute campus.

The college administration too was informed about the abduction.

Taking prompt action on the incident, Dilip Jaiswal, the director of the college and member of the Legislative Council (MLC) alerted the police.

The police swung into action building pressure on the kidnapers. More than 50 doctors and all the students of the medical college led by Jaiswal gathered on National Highway-31 shouting slogans against the district administration and demanded immediate release of the medical student.

The agitators blocked the NH-31 — a single road connecting northeastern states with the rest of the country — between 9pm and 10pm.

At 11pm, the criminals released Singh near the Kishanganj bus stand, Jaiswal told The Telegraph.

“Named FIRs have been registered at the Town police station against Pappu Rai, Mohammad Salauddin and Subodh Rai. Police had earlier booked Subodh in a case related to snatching,” Jaiswal said.

Kishanganj superintendent of police (SP) Ranjit Kumar Mishra said: “Santosh Rai has been arrested in relation to the abduction case and further raids are being conducted in different places of the district. Subodh runs a gang of seven people and they commit such crimes.” The criminals, who had abducted Singh, snatched his cellphone and a gold chain. Medical tests are being conducted over Singh, the police said. Singh, who hails from Bhatinda in Punjab, had come to pursue MBBS in MGM Medical College in Kishanganj.

In another incident at Bahadurganj in Kishaganj district, a man was caught red-handed with 11 packets of heroin weighing around 4.95kg.

The catch, each packet containing 450gm of heroin, is estimated at Rs 6 crore.

“The Seema Suraksha Bal and the Bihar Police conducted the raid today morning,” the Kishanganj superintendent of police said.
