Munger: Six persons died but a newborn girl was miraculously saved when their car crashed into a truck on the Sikandara-Jamui road in the early hours of Friday.

The accident occurred on National Highway 33A, Sikandara police station house officer Pramod Kumar said.

Tarhari resident Niwas Pandey, 48, and his wife Seema Devi, 46, were taking their daughter Archana Kumari, 26, to the Jamui sadar hospital around 12.30am after she delivered a girl child at home.

The three members of the family died, besides driver Vipul Kumar, 40, Niwas' neighbour Savitri Devi, 60, and ASHA worker Anjani Kumari, 35.

Jamui superintendent of police J. Reddy said the accident occurred near Lahela village on Sikandara-Jamui road, 145km from Patna.

"All of the deceased were from Tarhari village under Halsi police station in Lakhisarai district. They were going to Jamui sadar hospital for the treatment of Archana Kumari, who developed some physical problems after giving birth at home."

He said the bodies of all the six deceased were handed over to the family members after post-mortem on Friday.

The lone survivor - the baby girl born around 10pm on Thursday - has been handed over to Tarhari residents.

Manoj Singh, another Tarhari resident, said: "Vipul Kumar, the driver and owner of the car was reluctant to go, as he had spent three consecutive nights driving on duty. But he was forced as Archana's condition deteriorated."

Manoj said Niwas was also the village priest.

The Sikandara police have seized the six-wheeler truck following the accident.

Station house officer Pramod Kumar said the truck belonged to a contractor of a road construction company and was stationary next to the road without any warning lights on. "In the dark, the driver of the ill-fated car could not see and crashed into the truck," he told The Telegraph .
