Patna, Dec. 11: Bihar is aiming to set a world record by creating a 2,700-km-long human chain on January 21.

At present, 1,155-km-long human chain formed in Nepal in 2015 is considered the longest.

The purpose of the excise is to generate awareness on liquor prohibition and make people aware of the ill effects of alcohol consumption.

Senior state officials are mobilising resources to make the event a success. Chief minister Nitish Kumar will take part in the event by joining the human chain in Patna.

Chief secretary Anjani Kumar Singh said: "I am sure we will enter the Guinness World Records after we form the longest human chain in the world. Two crore people will participate to make the chain 2,700-km long. Earlier, Bangladesh had formed a 1,000-km chain, which was surpassed by Nepal during the Madhesh Movement."

On December 11, 2004, over 5 million people joined hands to form a human chain of 1,050-km (652.4 miles) from Teknaf to Tentulia in Bangladesh. The participants were supporters of 14 political parties of Bangladesh, which were demanding the removal of the government of the day. On October 1, 2015, a human chain was formed in Nepal supporting the Madhesh Movement to pressure the Nepal government to withdraw the "discriminatory policies", which was institutionalised in the constitution that came into effect on September 20, 2015. The Madhesh Movement human chain was 1,155-km long.

Prohibition came into effect in Bihar from April 5 this year and since then Nitish has been extensively campaigning in support of the ban describing the move for the betterment of the society.

In Patna, the main function will be organised at Gandhi Maidan. Nitish will be present at the maidan.

The chain in Patna will be formed from Koilwar to Mokama, Patna-Masaurhi-Hajipur and Bakhtiyarpur-Biharsharif.

Koilwar is 45km west of Patna, while Mokama is 100km east of the state capital. Masaurhi is 30km southwest of Patna and Hajipur is 25km north of Patna. Bakhtiyarpur is about 50km east of Patna and Biharsharif is around 50km south of Bakhtiyarpur.

Singh said the district magistrates have been instructed to mobilise resources, as they are the ones who have been given the responsibility for the mega event.

On how the state will claim the Guinness World Records, Singh said: "Our motive is to form the human chain of 2 crore people that would obviously make a record. We are making arrangements for satellite images, photography from drones and helicopters as well. There would be proper documentation of the chain."
