Patna: A newly married woman jumped into the Ganga from JP Setu late on Monday evening in what is being seen as a suicide though no body has been recovered as yet.

Nibha Devi, 22, jumped from near pillar number 3 of the bridge around 8pm on Monday. Traffic on the bridge around that time is usually very thin.

Rescue operations could be started only on Tuesday morning, but owing to the high current in the river, the body could not be fished out.

Sachidanand Singh, the station house officer at Digha police station, said: "Rescue teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and private divers carried out rescue operations but due to high current in the river, the body could not be brought out till late (Tuesday) evening." The operation will be resumed on Wednesday morning.

Nibha, who was preparing for competitive examinations, stayed at Rajiv Nagar area with her brother Naveen Kumar and younger sister. She got married to one Shintu Kumar who stays in Bihta. Nibha's parents too are residents of Bihta.

Singh said the woman's family members were yet to lodge any missing person's complaint. He said Nibha's brother told the police that the woman was not suffering from depression nor was she facing any problems.

According to police sources, Nibha left her house on Monday evening, saying she is going out to distribute prasad (holy offering) of the Janmashtami puja to some relatives. When Nibha did not return till late in the evening, the family members got worried. Nibha's brother and other family members searched for her at the homes of various relatives, but in vain.

Later in the evening, Nibha's brother Naveen received an SMS on his cell phone from Nibha's mobile number, stating that she is going to commit suicide by jumping from JP Setu.

The worried family members rushed to the bridge. The local Digha police were also informed. The police recovered the woman's slippers and her mobile phone from the spot.
