Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador to Washington, said the visit confirmed that Washington has been waging a “proxy war” against Russia using “enormous resources, weapons, intelligence capabilities”.

As the Russian Army has suffered major setbacks in the war, the country’s officials and its vast propaganda machine have begun to emphasise that Moscow is not only fighting Kyiv, but also waging an existential war against a coalition of western states bent on destroying Russia.
