Dum Dum: A woman was apparently forced to get off the women's compartment of a Bongaon local train with her two-month-old granddaughter at Dum Dum Cantonment following an argument over seats on Monday.

"Around 8.25pm, we received information about a woman trying to steal an infant," a Sealdah GRP officer said. "When our officers reached Dum Dum Cantonment, it became clear that some passengers in the women's compartment had forced Sima Das, 50, to get off the train with her sick granddaughter."

She was returning home to Habra after getting the child treated at RG Kar hospital, the officer said.

Her daughter Champa and son-in-law Kush Dey were on the same train in a general compartment.

Das had boarded the women's compartment as it was relatively less crowded.

"Her daughter and son-in-law had no inkling that she was at Dum Dum Cantonment station.

"A vehicle was sent to pick them up from their home and brought to the station to identify the child and get the woman's version verified," the officer said. "The family was reunited after 3am on Tuesday."

Railway officials made arrangements for the family to get the child treated at RG Kar hospital, a railway official said.

The family did not file any complaint against the passengers of the women's compartment, the official said.
