A woman who works in an IT firm in Sector V forced a man off a bus after she allegedly caught him video-recording her on his phone and dragged him to police on Monday.
The woman mentioned in her complaint that she caught the man - Bhabendranath Biswas, in his 30s - video-recording her around 3.30pm, half an hour after she had boarded the Garia-bound air-conditioned bus on route 47 from Narkelbagan in Sector V.
The police said the woman had kept her bags on the seat next to hers. Although the bus was almost empty, Biswas asked her to remove the bags so he could sit.
"She put all her bags on her lap and dozed off. A little later, she was jolted out of her sleep when the driver suddenly pressed the brakes and found the man capturing her on his cell phone," a police officer said.
The woman snatched the phone and shouted at the driver, asking him to stop the bus. The bus stopped at Panchannagram, on the Bypass, in the Tiljala area. The woman, a Garia resident, dragged the man off the bus and to the nearest police kiosk, around 20m from where the bus stopped.
Tiljala police station was alerted, from where a team arrived and arrested the man.
"The accused claimed he had not noticed when the video option on his new touchscreen phone had been activated. However, we found that his phone contained multiple video clips. The clips suggest the recordings were done deliberately. And the phone was not new," an officer of Tiljala police station said.
Biswas, who runs a grocery store in Barasat, has been booked for outrage of modesty and voyeurism. If convicted, he can be jailed for five years.
Earlier this month, a law student had stepped forward to register a complaint against an employee of a department store, who allegedly sexually harassed her. The employee was sacked and arrested following her complaint.
