Raiganj, Oct. 10: A woman from Balurghat today lodged a police complaint accusing expelled CPM leader Ritabrata Banerjee of having a physical relationship with her after promising marriage.

The woman, who claimed to be a software engineer posted abroad, said she had returned to her Balurghat home about a week ago. In her complaint at Balurghat police station, she mentioned that the expelled CPM Rajya Sabha MP had transferred Rs 2.5 lakh to her bank account as "compensation".

The woman had earlier levelled similar allegations against Ritabrata on social media.

Ritabrata has termed the allegations "baseless" and filed a counter-complaint in Garfa police station in Calcutta.

"I met him in May last year. He said he loved me and wanted to marry me. He came here to Balurghat, met my mother and made the same promise. Later, we met at his residence on South Avenue (in New Delhi).... He had even visited The Netherlands in 2016 while I was studying there," the woman alleged.

"Now, he has offered me a bribe of Rs 50 lakh and want me to keep the relationship a secret. He outraged my modesty and has transferred a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh to my bank account without my knowledge," said the woman.

The woman said she had sent e-mails to the chief minister's office and to some offices of the central government.

An officer of Garfa police station said: "He (Ritabrata) admitted he knew the woman and got acquainted with her in 2016. The MP told us that the woman had portrayed herself as someone in urgent need of a loan."
