Jalpaiguri, June 8: The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has shown the yellow card to its Hindi-medium schools here, for consistently faring poorly in the Madhyamik examinations over the past few years.

The board officials have threatened to cancel their affiliation if they do not improve their educational standard immediately.

The board has blacklisted thirteen Hindi-medium schools in the district, including Marwari Balika Vidyalaya in Jalpaiguri, Chengmari High School at Chengmari tea estate in Nagracata, Odlabari Adarsha Hindi High School and Kalchini Hindi Madhyamik Vidyalaya.

According to sources, the results of these schools are turning worse every year, with the pass percentage coming down to as low as seven.

?Shocked with their results, which are much below average, we have sent them a warning letter. We have told the school authorities to upgrade their education standard and to ensure better results from students. Otherwise, their affiliation will be cancelled,? said Manoranjan Bhadra, a member of the WBBSE from Jalpaiguri.

According to government rules, of the total number of students appearing for Madhyamik examinations from a school, 40 per cent should pass. Else, the board can cancel the affiliation of the school.

?In all these schools, the pass percentage is around 10. After conducting inspections, we have found that the method of teaching there is very poor. Their standard can, in no way, be called average. We had to sound a warning to them,? Bhadra said.

He said usually around 350 students of Marwari Balika Vidyalaya appear for Madhyamik, of which only 20 to 22 pass.

When asked whether the language was a barrier in their path to success, Bhadra said: ?Apart from English and Bengali, the questions are printed in Hindi as well. Besides, the invigilators at the examination halls always help the students if they fail to understand any question.?

?We do not think the language is any problem. The authorities and the teachers of these schools do not know how to prepare the students for boards exams, resulting in such disastrous scores,? he said.
