If you need to include your name on the electoral rolls, delete that of a deceased relation or get a correction made on the same, head to your polling station by September 13. The Election Commission of India has set up kiosks at all polling booths to help voters.
“This is an annual programme by the commission to update the list. It is called Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls (SRER),” said an officer at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Education booth. “We are manning the counters from 11.30am to 4.30pm every day till September 13, except on September 3. We are helping people register themselves on the voting list, rectifying mistakes on the card, changing addresses where need be and deleting names upon demise.” They will also help in case one’s voter card is lost or in case non-resident citizens want to register as voters.
Students getting new cards require documents like age proof (birth certificate/ school certificate), nationality proof (copy of Elector’s photo identity card of parents), proof of ordinary residence (passport/ ration card). Residents getting EPIC made after the age of 21 need to give an additional declaration as to why they hadn’t got a card made earlier. Their cases will be scrutinised to rule out foul play.
The booths are ready with electors’ information slips (which have details of the voter card). Voters may collect them from the booths or have them delivered at their doors. In case voters spot any error on the slips they are supposed to inform the booths.
“While processing the applications we shall go over to their homes to verify the information,” said the officer. “The draft roll will be published and made available at the booths on January 5, 2018, and the new EPIC cards will be distributed January 25 onwards.”
“This exercise is taking place across all 77,354 polling stations of the state. September 10 has been marked as a special campaign date when booth level agents of political parties would also be present to receive claims and objections,” said Jaydip Mukhopadhyay, joint chief electoral officer, West Bengal.
