Cooch Behar, Jan. 4: The officers, teachers and students of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) today prevented vice-chancellor Mrinal Kanti Majumdar from entering the varsity.
Amid shouts of “VC go back”, Majumdar had to return from the main gate of the agriculture university in Pundibari, Cooch Behar.
The officers, teachers, students and non-teaching employees of UBKV turned against Majumdar the day he removed registrar Parimal Sarkar from his post.
Majumdar had handed Sarkar his release letter on December 4, but had his decision overturned by the Bengal agriculture department in less than three weeks.
After Sarkar was reinstated, the protesters agreed to lift the ceasework they had begun at the university from December 5, but continued with their demand that the vice-chancellor should resign.
Mrigen Ghosh, the secretary of the officers’ association, which led the agitation, today told reporters that Majumdar had “no moral right to stay on in the chair”.
The registrar said the vice-chancellor had removed him from the post to “hide his own misdeeds”.
“The order for my release did not mention why I was being asked to leave. The order (ref. VC/UBKV-1395), only said my services to the university were no longer required,” Sarkar said.
