Calcutta: Two women from North 24-Paraganas and Hooghly districts have died of dengue since Saturday.
Mitali Nandy, 44, of Prasadpur in Hooghly had fever for the past seven days and her platelet count had dropped. An NS1 antigen test at a clinic in Jangipara near her home had shown negative results.
Dengue was confirmed at AMRI Dhakuria after she was admitted to the hospital late on Friday. She died at 11.40am on Sunday, a hospital official said.
Anima Mandal, in her late 30s, had fever for five days. Mandal, who lived in Habra, North 24-Parganas, died at a nursing home in Barasat on Saturday afternoon.
One of Nandy's relatives said the test results of the Jangipara clinic had come in the way of her treatment. The NS1 antigen test, done in the rapid technique method, showed negative results, the relative said.
But the NS1 test using the ELISA method at AMRI confirmed she had dengue.
An IgM antibody test showed positive results but she was "extremely critical" by the time she was brought there, the hospital official said.
Her blood pressure had dropped and she was unconscious when she was brought in, the official said. She was put on ventilator support immediately but couldn't be revived, he said. The death certificate mentioned "dengue with multi-organ failure".
Mandal's family members alleged they were forced to take her back to Barasat as she didn't received proper treatment at NRS hospital. We had to take her back because no doctors attended to her," one of her relatives said. The death certificate mentioned dengue shock syndrome.
