Sources said Kalyani, who got elected on a BJP ticket and later joined Trinamul but is still officially a BJP MLA, was returning home from Calcutta. He had taken the New Alipurduar bound Padatik Express and alighted at the Malda Town station on Saturday morning.

Accordingly, his security guards headed for Malda in the SUV to receive him. While crossing Gazole, the accident occurred. Among the two guards, one has suffered serious injuries and is under treatment at the Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital.

A Gazole police team went to the accident spot. The truck driver was arrested and the vehicle seized.

Kalyani alleged a conspiracy. “I suspect it to be a conspiracy. The police should find the truth,” said the MLA.

20kg tortoise meat seized

Twenty kilos of tortoise meat were seized during a forest department raid at a market in Nathuahat of Dhupguri block in Jalpaiguri district on Saturday.

Those selling the meat have fled.

Sources said the tortoises were probably caught from the Diana and Murti rivers nearby.

“It is illegal to catch and kill tortoises. Two persons who we suspect are local residents had brought the tortoises to the local market, killed those and were selling the meat. Foresters promptly acted on information and reached the spot. They have seized the meat but the persons who were selling escaped,” said Seema Choudhury, an honorary wildlife warden of the department.

A team of New Jalpaiguri police station seized 49.2kg of cannabis from a vehicle on Friday. Sushil Roy, the driver, who hails from Cooch Behar town, has been arrested. A case has been registered.
