The Trinamul Congress hit the streets at many places across Bengal on Tuesday to protest the hike in the price of LPG by the Narendra Modi government.

The protests were organised a day after Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee had asked party leaders to get out of comfort zones and rebuild their bond with the masses.

In south Calcutta, Trinamul youth chief Abhishek Banerjee led a march from Golpark to the Hazra Crossing and launched a scathing attack on the BJP.

“Unlike the BJP government at the Centre, our government in the state did not come about with the help of central forces and the Election Commission. Our government was elected with the love and affection of the people of Bengal. Therefore, even if the BJP government wants, it will not succeed in toppling our government,” said the Diamond Harbour MP.

On Thursday, he said, Trinamul will organise massive protest marches in all 144 wards of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation.

“Our losses in the Lok Sabha election did not come about because of the loss of popularity but because of the transfer of CPM votes to the BJP. Let me warn the BJP, you may have more than 300 MPs in Parliament. But each of our 22 MPs is capable of putting up a fight,” said Abhishek.

“The time to rest is over. We must all gear up to fight with all our might and ensure that in 2021, the BJP is given a burial through democratic means, the BJP which is out to destroy the culture of our state,” said the nephew of the chief minister.

Similar marches were conducted in Malda, Jalpaiguri, Siliguri and Balurghat on Tuesday.
