Arindam Sarkar, a prominent Trinamul leader of Raiganj town in North Dinajpur district, reportedly received a letter late on Monday evening from an anonymous sender alerting him to a “conspiracy hatched to murder him”.

Sarkar, who is the vice-chairperson of the board of administrators of Raiganj municipality, filed a complaint with Raiganj police on Monday night.

Police have filed a case and started a probe.

According to Sarkar, late on Monday evening, when his mother was alone at home, a youth reached their door and gave her a letter.

When Sarkar came home and opened the letter, he found the alert from a “well wisher”.

“The letter is written in Hindi saying some people from Raiganj had recently been to a neighbouring state. There, they met some contract killers and handed over money, assigning them to kill me. In fact, the registration number of the vehicle they used has been mentioned in the letter. The sender alerted me that these killers can enter Raiganj and make attempts on my life,” said Sarkar.

Police probing the case are trying to collect CCTV footage of Sarkar’s neighbourhood to identify the youth who delivered the letter.

“We are also trying to trace the car and will speak to the owner to gather information,” said a source.

The Trinamul leader has accused other political parties of the conspiracy. “We suspect political vendetta,” he said.

Leaders of the saffron camp brushed aside any implied charge.

“Our party does not believe in terror politics. It seems a fallout of Trinamul’s inner feud,” said Nimai Kabiraj, a district general secretary of BJP.
