Shibpur: The Class of 1992 at IIEST, Shibpur, has gifted its alma mater a bronze sculpture to commemorate the 25th year of the batch's passing out.

The artwork by sculptor Tarak Gorai, which has been installed near the institute's guest house, tries to capture the essence of the IIEST's role in producing top engineering graduates for the country.

Titled World is Waiting, the sculpture is a headless figure representing a student with his arms thrown wide open. In one hand, he holds an engineering equipment. One of the legs is raised in the air, representing a movement of sorts. The figure wears a long robe, all in bronze.

The alumni said the sculpture was "dedicated" to the "quintessential student" of IIEST. "We wanted to express our deep sense of gratitude for our alma mater and the statue is an expression of our homage to this great institution," said one of the members of the 1992 batch.

The alumni also felicitated former professors as part of the batch's silver jubilee celebrations and came up with a coffee table book on the institute that travels down memory lane.

The batch of 1992 has pledged to support meritorious students of IIEST with financial aid and assured the institute all possible help.

Members spread across the globe have converged on the Shibpur campus to attend the silver anniversary celebrations.

Other batches have gifted their alma mater a swimming pool, a gate and contributed towards the renovation of the seminar room.

"This is the speciality of the IIEST alumni. Almost all batches want to pay back in some form or the other. What this particular batch has done is indeed praiseworthy," said Biman Banerjee, the registrar of IIEST.
