Chords and chimes of Carnatic Carnatic music, also known as Karnataka Sangitam, is one of the two styles of Indian music, the other being Hindustani. Like all Indian art forms, it is said to have a divine origin. Ancient treatises describe the connection of the origin of swaras to the sounds of animals and birds, and man’s keen sense of observation and perception of these intriguing sounds. Its present form is based on historical developments that can be traced to the 15th and 16th centuries. Besides these factors, folk music is said to have been a natural origin of this form of music, with many folk tunes corresponding to certain Carnatic ragas. Carnatic music is completely melodic, with improvised variations. The main emphasis is on vocal music. This genre originated in the southern part of the country and later, thanks to dedicated souls like S.Kannan, founder of Rasikhapriya, this form spread its wings to other parts of the country. Rasikhapriya was set up 15 years ago by S. Kannan to popularise Carnatic music in this part of the country. Since its inception, the organisation has been hosting an annual music festival, providing a platform for both musicians and connoisseurs to come under a roof and enjoy the very best of Carnatic music. This year’s five-day music festival features renowned artistes S. Shashank (flute; picture right) today at 6.45 pm, followed by K. Srividya (vocal) on the second day, Hyderabad Brothers D. Raghavachary and Sheshachary (vocal) on the third, Nithyashree Mahadevan (vocal) on the fourth, T.R. Subrahmanyam (demonstration on Pallavis) and Sudha Raghunathan (vocal) on the final day.
