Ode to the spirit of music With its beginnings in France in 1982, World Music Day was celebrated for the first time in Calcutta in 1986 by L’ Atelier de Musique, the prime string orchestra of the city. To mark this important annual event in its music calendar, this year, the group presents a concert that unites aspiring young musicians from various local schools and colleges including the La Martiniere Schools, Modern High School for Girls, St James School, Loreto House, South Point High School and St Xavier’s School and St Xavier’s College. The programme features seminal works of great masters — Bach’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Vivaldi’s Summer from The Four Seasons, Mozart’s Piano Concerto in A and Violin Concerto No.3 and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, along with renderings of Tagore songs in symphonic arrangements. The orchestra also presents evergreen songs by The Beatles and Mohiner Ghoraguli, the avant-garde Bengali songwriters. Modern High School for Girls choir will present choral works. The 60-strong junior ensemble of L’ Atelier will perform the theme from Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
