Ode to Tagore
The British Council celebrates 150 years of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary with a range of collaborations, performances and publications throughout the year. Today, British Council, in collaboration with Penguin, will display several titles including the Poet’s collection of poetry and novels, as well as texts written on Tagore. Some of the books on display include Farewell Song (Tr. Radha Chakravarty; pub. Modern Classics), Gitanjali (Tr. William Radice), I Won’t Let You Go : Selected Poems (Tr. Ketaki Kushari Dyson), Jewel That Is Best, The: Collected Brief Poems (Tr. William Radice) Kabuliwalla: Stories (Tr. William Radice; pub. Penguin Evergreens), Singer and His Song, The (Reba Som), Women of the Tagore Household (Chitra Deb), Boyhood Days (Tr. Radha Chakravarty; Intro: Amartya Sen; pub. Puffin Classics) and Prince and Other Modern Fables, The (Tr. Sreejata Guha). Actor Parambrata Chatterjee will launch the collection and an online quiz for members. Upcoming singer Samantak Sinha of Gaaner Opare fame will render select Tagore songs on the occasion. By invitation only.

May 12 at Academy of Fine Arts & May 15 at Girish Mancha; 6.30pm: Shohan presents its latest production, Manbhanjan, based on a short story by Tagore. Direction: Anish Ghosh. May 12 at Madhusudan Mancha; 6.30pm: Little Thespian presents Do Rang, based on Tagore’s stories Aakhri Raat (Hindi) and Duraasha (Urdu). Translation, design & direction: Uma Jhunjhunwala. The entire city is all geared up to celebrate Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary today, and here’s a roundup of the events scheduled for the day.

At Rabindra Sadan Prangan Mancha, 5.30am: Shehnai recital; 6am: Chorus by Bhowanipore Baikalee Association; Mangalik Nritya by Dance Group Federation; welcome address by Shaon Sen, administrative officer, Rabindra Sadan; and song and recitation by distinguished artistes. At 6.30pm: Kavi Sammelan. Organised by Rabindra Sadan. At Ma Tara Mandir complex, opp. Ahiritola/Shovabazar Circular Railway, 5.30am: Shatayu’s tribute to the Poet with shehnai recital, song and offering of flowers. At Star Theatre, 6am - 2pm: Anandadhara’s Rabir Gaan Kabir Gaan features song and recitation by well-known artistes. At Karunamoyee Fair Ground, Salt Lake; 6am: Song, reading and recitation by well-known artistes. Organised by Bidhannagar Sanskriti Angan. At Priyanath Mullick Road boulevard, Bhowanipore; 6am: Gitabitan Praktani celebrates Tagore’s birth anniversary with songs, reading and recitation. At Jorasanko Thakurbari; 6.30am - 1.30pm & 4pm - 7pm: Rabindra Bharati University celebrates the occasion with song, reading and recitation by eminent artistes. At Southern Avenue boulevard in front of Nava Nalanda High School (25 Southern Avenue); 6.30am - 11am: Nava Nalanda’s Rabindra Smaran features group performances of songs and dances by about 400 students of the school as well as solo recitals by eminent performers. At Subinoy Roy Mancha, HA Block community park, Salt Lake; 6.30am: Kavi Pranam, organised by Shreenandana and HA Block Residents’ Association, features song, recitation and reading by popular artistes. At Rising Sun Playhouse & KG School, BA-156 Salt Lake, Sector 1; 10am: Staff, teachers and students of the school present song, dance and recitation along with an exhibition of drawings and paintings based on Sahaj Path, Shishu and Gitabitan. At Gurusaday Museum Hall, Bratachari Gram, Thakurpukur; 4pm: Discussions: Rabindranath O Gramonnayan by Swapan Mukhopadhyay and Guru-Shishya Parampara O Rabindrasangeet by Bejoy Kumar Singha. Also, song, recitation, poetry-reading and audio-play. Organised by Protibhu Vision of New Age & Gurusaday Museum. At Oxford Bookstore, 17 Park Street; 5pm: Oxford Bookstore Calcutta and Apeejay School present Aamar Mukti Aaloye Aaloye - Liberated unto Light: A skit and musical performance by the school children. At Maharshi Bhavan, Jorasanko; 6pm: A discussion along with recital on Rabindranather Gaan - Soumendranath Thakur Anusanga by Amit Das. Also, songs by artistes of Baitanik including Subid Tagore, Alpana Sengupta, Uma Mukhopadhyay and Ananya Chowdhury.

Quamaruddin Memorial Lecture 2011 on Role of Muslims in the Freedom Struggle of India. May 9 at Ramakrishna Mission Saradapitha, Belur Math; 6pm: Swami Tattwajnanananda will speak on Mundakaponishad. EXHIBITION

May 9 at Rabindranath Tagore Centre, ICCR, 9A Ho Chi Minh Sarani: On the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Rabindranath Tagore Centre, ICCR Calcutta salutes a myriad-minded Poet with a exhibition series: (1) Tagore in Advertisements; (2) Of Tagore and Cinema; (3) Tagore in Philately; (4) Rabindranath Tagore: Pilgrimages to the East, a photographic exhibition on the Poet’s tour of South-East Asia and China; and (5) Tagore and Kantha. Inauguration by Dr Bharati Ray, vice president, ICCR, this evening at 6.30. Chief guest: Suresh Goel, director general, ICCR. The exhibition will remain open till June 9, 11am to 7pm. May 9 - 14 at India Kitsch, 37C Hindusthan Road, 40658352, 9830908712; 11am - 7pm: An exhibition of a limited edition of beachwear collection along with a range of sarongs, flip-flops, accessories and summer dresses.
