Southern strokes

Southern strokes
Traditional paintings of south India that added lustre to both temple precincts and palaces in the heyday of their royal patronage, have witnessed a steady and sustained renaissance in the modern era. There has been a revival of the Thanjavur art of Tamil Nadu and the Mysore school of art in Karnataka. Andhra Pradesh’s Kalamkari work has gained much prominence in recent years, while Kerala’s murals are now being transposed on canvas and paper, bringing to life yet another heritage temple art. While keeping to traditional painting styles and formats, modern artists have brought in new themes and contemporary sensibilities to the art forms, investing them with a fresh perspective. Soundaryam, the ongoing exhibition of paintings by eminent artists from south India, offers an extensive survey of the region’s contemporary art scene and provides insights into its emerging trends. Participants: Akshay Anand, Bala Bhakta Raju (a painting by him appears here), Chippa Sudhakar, Din Reddy, Ganesh Pasupuleti, Harshvardhan, J.M.S. Mani Kahini Arte Merchant, Laxma Goud, Narendranath, Nandini Goud, Pradeep Puthoor, Ramesh Gorjala, S. Natraj, Srikanth Kohle, Shamshad Husain, Srinivas, Sachin Jaltare, Thota Vaikuntam and Vimla.
